[PARENTING] Be a Sporting Father
Here are some good reasons why watching sports together with your children is a great idea:
Bonding time.
Watching sporting activities together make a great source for discussions. Make an event of it – prepare snacks, change the seating arrangements to create a different atmosphere, turn up the volume for theatrical effect. It may all seem silly to the adult but rest assured your kids will enjoy the fun of dad spending time with them. Such shared times will form lasting memories worth cherishing which will be difficult to develop as your kids grow up.
Healthy activity.
Children generally love sports. Beginning with television, you can now encourage your child to venture outdoors to watch live matches. Take your child shopping at the sports stores; buy a jersey or a pair of boots. This means more time getting to know each other and sharing interests.
Life lessons.
Sporting activities and even watching sports movies with father-friendly themes make rich sources for lessons on values and being a good person. You can start discussions by asking open-ended questions on fair play, discipline, cooperation, positive attitude and integrity. Make connections with familiar experiences in your child's environment. There are lessons to be learnt in giving opinions and respecting differences.
Narrowing the generation gap.
While watching sports activities with your child, you will probably be reliving your own childhood sports experiences. Talk to your child about what sports you liked when you were growing up. Talk about your favourite sports personality or what you did as a supporter. This will help your child to visualise what life was like when you were younger. differences.
Sharing common interests.
Children often like to identify with their dads and that means looking for things that are common to the both of you. Watching sports with dad appears to be the most convenient and makes it easy for them to connect. You will even find families where the whole family ends up loving the same sport or supporting the same team.
Take a step further by going out there and playing the sport with your child. The time invested will provide a lifetime of memories.
