Identify the source
Try not to reach for nearest toy or favourite song to help stop child crying. There are many reasons for a child to burst into tears. Getting to the root of the problem may sound like common sense but it should be the first step before trying to find a solution. Rock and swing
Children love movement — and who better to swing them around than Daddy?
Song and Dance
Hold child close to you with his little arms wrapped round your neck. Then, dance gently, swaying back and forth. You can even throw in a twirl or two. Chant words according to the rhythm of your dance. The words don't matter as long as they are repetitive. As the crying reduces, lower your voice and your child will do the same.
Clown around
Be as funny as you can. Do your own stunts, pretend to have a dramatic fall, put something on your head and let it fall off with a loud cry of "Oh no!", make funny faces. You can turn cries into giggles.
Keep close
Warm bodies, the regular beat of your heart, the gentle rise and fall of your breathing and the swaying motion as you walk can cradle your child to sleep. Place your child in a sling or carrier in front of you so he can experience all these lullaby techniques.
Waiting game
All children cry. Give them time to settle before you rush in with your remedies. If it is not pain or hunger or a wet nappy, then let him cry. Step in when your instinct tells you it has gone on for too long.
